Over the years, we've rescued animals from fates worse than death and found them loving homes. Below are pictures of some of these animals. We are showing some, the way we found them, and some, the way they are now.
After visiting these special friends, please take a look at other dogs and cats still awaiting adoption. Visit Animal Shelters & Rescue Groups, and perhaps you'll be compelled to give one of them a life in YOUR loving home.
Annie
(pictured above left) was rescued in the Fairview section
of Camden, NJ. Young children beat her with baseball bats
and broke her jawbones. Extensive orthopedic surgery put her
jaw back together. Annie was only 7 months old. She was adopted
into a loving home in Cherry Hill, NJ.

BEFORE:
Abandoned, hurt and hungry; yet another dog covered with mange. Like all the others she too was taken to the hospital for treatment. Sofie, as we named her, will find the home she deserves. |
|
AFTER:
And some weeks later she did! The dog from the Mean Streets of Camden, now with loving people in her wonderful home. Her mom describes her as - "...the best I have ever known." |
|
Another bonus for Sofie is her big brother Sirius. |
Above: Sweet Becca, as we named her, was rescued from a violent household in Camden, NJ. As expected, she was terrified of everyone and everything. It took some time, but she came around and found a loving home.
Above: This dog did not look as healthy and happy on the streets of Camden as she does now. She and her 12 pups were found in horrible conditions. Time at the hospital and loving care healed the wounds. All are safe and all were adopted.
Above: This handsome Camden pup, now named Tobi, found his forever home in Doylestown, PA. Tobi joins mix breed rescue dog Wookie to romp the grounds of their magnificent country home.
Above: This poor pit bull pup was found in North Camden. Her leg was severed by either brutal blows or outrageous neglect, we may never know. This gentle dog we named Rosie deserves the very best that we can provide. And, a few weeks later we did. Rosie found a loving home in Philadelphia! Read details in our Spring 2007 Newsletter

After Photo: Happy, safe and sound!
Above (3 photos): An emaciated dog from the streets. It's a sight we see all too often in Camden. Thankfully now she's safe and and sound (as seen in the "After Photo"). We named her Sadie and we'll do what we always do, find her a perfect home.
Above: Found on the streets of Camden, these little ones didn't have much time left to live.
Today they're safe and secure. Both will heal and both will find a home.

BEFORE:
For months this poor dog hung on to life in a filthy Camden basement. She weight just 22 pounds on the day she arrived at the hospital. |
|
AFTER:
Today, the dog we named Emma is all smiles! Three months of care brought her around. Emma, now a normal 50 pounds, found a loving home in Massachusetts. |
|
BEFORE:
This poor dog was found on the streets in the Cramer Hill section of Camden. |
|
AFTER:
Weeks, and lots of TLC, later! Incredible as it might seem little Cramer turned out to be this handsome pup. |
|
BEFORE:
Filmore, as we named this little guy, had it rough on Camden's Filmore Street. |
|
AFTER:
But, a couple of weeks at the hospital worked wonders. Filmore found his forever home in Cherry Hill, NJ |
Brush!
Rinse!
Off to bed!

Taz, the shepherd from East Camden, was found lying in a puddle of blood, he was near death.
Months of vet care and a loving foster home brought him around.
Eventually, we found Tazzie his forever home.
Today he lives the Life of Riley on the Jersey Shore where he learned a bunch of things! |
"Our thanks to all of you who unselfishly provide foster homes. After weeks or months of nurturing, we know just how difficult it is to hand over the leash..."

Above left: On a cold Winter's day, we found this sweet dog shivering in a dilapidated dog house in East Camden. She was starving, covered with mange and had been severely beaten.
Above right: We named her Dolly and many weeks later found her a loving home.
|
Perhaps the true meaning of a "throwaway society". Luckily, this poor dog's cries for help saved his life as he was found with leather belts tied around his neck in a locked garbage dumpster in South Camden. |
|
This pup was hit by a car, and was then dragged along under the car for some distance. Lucky Boy, as we named him, survived his ordeal and soon found a wonderful home. |
 |
This cat, unlike many others, survived Camden children's blinding attempts using blow darts. The dart, which was four inches long, was embedded into the cat's skull by more than an inch. Once removed by the vet, and lots of TLC later, the cat was adopted. |
 |
A mother dog was found nursing six puppies on the street. All were all rescued, and all are now doing fine. |
 |
The little brown and white terrier was pointed out to us by local power company workers. They had observed a man beating her and pleaded with us to save her. We took her and a puppy who was also at the home. The teenage boy from the household was afraid that the puppy would eventually end up being beaten by his stepfather, too. Both received vet care, recovered fully and were adopted. The little terrier was adopted by a veterinarian from Vermont who named her Jersey. |
 |
This cat was found with handcuffs that had grown into her neck. According to neighbors, the cat's caretaker used the handcuffs to keep her chained. She was later adopted. |
 |
Maybe this was the little Camden dog's "shelter" for some time: locked away in a closed and unlicensed van with outside temperatures of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The dog was eventually adopted into a real home. |
 |
Although near death from starvation, thankfully this brave and gentle dog survived. |
 |
This puppy was suffering from an acute case of mange. Kati, as she was later named, was found in a filthy abandoned house. Neighbors laughed as we struggled to rescue her. She received the best of care and was deeply loved. Kati deserved to live a pampered life, if just for a while. |

Above: Two dogs were found with collars embedded in their necks. For weeks, no one paid attention to their plight. Once at the hospital, both received needed medical attentions and both found loving homes.

Above left: This dog suffered from an acute case of mange, but was later adopted into a loving home.
Above right: Yet another dog suffers from an acute case of mange.
Above Left:
We found this dog abused, abandoned and near death in the
Cramer Hill section of Camden. We named her Hannah
of Harrison Avenue in honor and in memory
of the many others in the area we could not help. Today,
Hannah lives a pampered life in a loving home complete
with her very own lake.
Above Right: Andy, as he was later named, was set on fire. His deep burn wounds took a long time to heal, and he was eventually adopted into a loving home.

Above
left: An accident was ruled out as this cat was treated
to remove a five-inch stick lodged in her eye. The
cat recovered and was later adopted.
Above right: To teach this dog a lesson, someone used a hammer
and hit him in the face. The dog recovered and was
adopted.
Above
left: Although emaciated, weak, and full of parasites,
this dog eventually recovered and was adopted.
Above right: Toby, as this sweet and gentle
dog was named, may have been a victim of a hit-and-run.
He was found on the streets of Camden dragging
his injured front leg. He was happy to see us,
and ever so happy for the TLC he received at the
hospital. After the surgery to remove the now useless
leg, he found a wonderful home. Toby's new parents
are shown in the picture with him.
Above: This dog's rope had grown into his neck so deeply
that he could barely hold up his head; he recovered
and eventually found a loving home.
Above: Clinging to life and to each other, these puppies
were found under a car on a cold December morning.
Both were severely malnourished and stricken with
mange. The pups recovered and were adopted.
Above: This
burnt-out house served as a refuge for these two dogs.
They were removed from the filth, taken to the hospital,
and are now on the road to recovery.

Above: Chessie
was rescued at 5th & Chestnut Streets in Camden,
NJ. We spotted her on the streets and saw that she
had a severe case of mange. We tracked her to an abandoned
house and persuaded her to come with us. She was hospitalized
for four months. Chessie was adopted into a loving
home in Mantua, NJ.

Above: Chucky
was pointed out to us by homeless people in North
Camden, NJ. The caring people contacted us and held
on to him until we could take him. He had a severe
case of mange and was hospitalized for five weeks.
Chucky was adopted into a loving home in Moorestown,
NJ.

Above: Filmore
was rescued at the corner of Fillmore & Viola
Streets in Camden, NJ. Caring neighbors had called
animal control for several weeks regarding his condition,
but had gotten no response. When the neighbors finally
reached us we were told that children had hacked off
his leg and tail with an ax. They also told us that
the children had abused many more homeless dogs on
a nightly basis in a nearby abandoned house. Filmore
needed surgery and intensive care and was adopted
into a loving home in Somerdale, NJ.

Above: Maddie
was found dragging a huge chain behind her in East
Camden, NJ. It was clear that she had been chained
up for months, but luckily she had managed to escape
her tormentors. The chain had grown so deep into her
neck that tissue had actually begun to grow around
each link. Maddie needed extensive surgery and was
adopted into a loving home in Cherry Hill, NJ.

Above: Princess
Anne was rescued from a junkyard in South
Camden, NJ. She may have once been the yard's "guard
dog", but now was no longer wanted. She had developed
a severe case of mange and was near death. The yard's
employees had killed all but one of her puppies by
running over them with cars. The rescued puppy, later
named Leroy, was adopted into a loving home in Audubon,
NJ. Princess Anne was hospitalized for six weeks and
adopted into a loving home in Pennsauken, NJ.

Above: Juan was found in North Camden, NJ. One of his legs had been broken by deranged people. It was an unusual break and he needed exhaustive orthopedic surgery. In order for his leg to ever work properly he needed swimming exercises. Indoor pools in the area would not take him so we had to drive him twice a week, for weeks, to a horse pool in Chester County, PA. After the first couple of times he actually enjoyed swimming. Juan was adopted into a loving home in Berlin, NJ.

Above: Bucky
was found during our mobile humane education sessions
in East Camden, NJ. He was suffering from a severe
case of mange. We tracked him to his refuge, a discarded
refrigerator box. Unable to contain him by ourselves,
we paid $20 to bystanders for help. He was hospitalized
for five weeks and adopted by Marion Churchill. Bucky
is Sarah's "brother."

Above: "It all began with Sarah, found in misery on a given day in the fall of 1992. A loving black dog with compelling eyes and a certain magic. Throughout, she has been my inspiration and the driving force to make a difference for those left behind. Sarah died in August 2003, but her magic continues to shine."
